Presentation:
Data warehouse renovation/revitalization requires a methodical approach. Successful data warehouse implementations grow over time in response to increased demands for information by the business constituencies they support. Meeting the demands of continuous enhancement and additions to a production warehouse on a demanding schedule can force warehouse support teams to follow less than optimal procedures.

A large Canadian bank has had a data warehouse in place since 1996. As a result of continuous change, the warehouse architecture began to collapse under its own weight, burdened with an inefficient database and ETL architecture design.

This case study will examine the following:

  • The approach and method taken to data warehouse renovation
  • The challenges that needed to be overcome in order to execute the renovations
  • The end result of the first phase of the initiative
  • Lessons learned from the exercise
  • What to do and what to avoid when renovating data warehouses
Speaker:

Mr. Light has managed and architected several medium and large-scale data warehouse / business intelligence programmes.  He has significant experience managing, designing and delivering n-tier client-server applications.

As the Principal Architect at a large Canadian bank, he provided expert guidance in the development of a revised target architecture for their existing CRM data warehouse.  The work products included a data warehouse re-engineering / renovation strategy, an application, data and technology architecture roadmap identifying current and future technology and, a programme plan to achieve the desired target state.  As a result, the bank has experienced significant reductions in load times and an improved data architecture facilitating both development and longer term maintenance as well as improved query performance for their OLAP and data mining applications.

In the role of Technical Programme Manager for a large Australian bank, Mr. Light provided advice on the best use of business intelligence technology in support of the bank’s CRM strategy and led the infrastructure planning and implementation activities as part of a $20 million AUD enhancement to an existing customer data warehouse.  The infrastructure enhancements allowed very aggressive nightly load windows for recalculations of Hyperion Essbase cubes in support of approximately 2000 domestic and international users.  This $8.5 million AUD portion of the project was delivered on time and within budget.

As Project Manager at a large U.S. bank, Mr. Light designed, developed, and implemented a data warehouse to analyze and manage the organization’s global computer-communications infrastructure.

During his career in the public sector, Mr. Light managed the successful implementation of some of the earliest client-server, distributed database applications.  He was his department’s client server and data warehouse development expert.
