GIS as Part of Mainstream Enterprise IT Infrastructure and Management
It
is estimated that 80% of the information within government and utility
organizations involves a spatial location. This suggests that an
enterprise solution should be centered on spatial data. Typically,
governments have separate departments -- all with a need for up-to-date
information that involves spatial locations. The information must be
accessible by everyone and available to everyone on an as-needed basis.
And, to be most effective, all information should be seen through a map
to understand the patterns and trends.
Enterprise Data Management solutions use relational databases to store
all of the information (spatial and tabular) of the enterprise. With
this solution, mission critical information is always available to the
different departments when it is needed. By using industry standard
relational database systems, information is accessible by all the
departments around the enterprise.
To
accomplish this vision, spatial data must be included in the relational
databases. It becomes just another set of information and is managed in
the same manner as the tabular information using industry standard RDBMS
tools. We should no longer discuss the use of GIS systems as a separate
issue, but rather, we should discuss how to incorporate spatial data in
our enterprise solutions. This increases the value of the information
for which you are responsible.
