Presentation(s): Implementing an ODS: Experiences from the Trenches

The operational data store (ODS) is a practical solution for providing near-real time consolidated data for addressing tactical and operational needs.  During recent years, the importance and popularity of the ODS has increased, primarily due to e-business and customer relationship management initiatives,  This session, based on actual experiences, will:

  • Define the ODS and distinguish it from other data stores,

  • Describe a methodology for building the ODS,

  • Describe the importance of the ODS for e-business,

  • Explain how the ODS is critical for an effective customer relationship program, and

  • Describe major pitfalls in building an operational data store.

Joyce Norris-Montanari is a Senior Vice President for Intelligent Solutions, Inc.   Her major strengths are in working with multiple vendors on numerous platforms and advising clients on tool selection through evaluations and analysis, especially on ETL and meta data products.  In addition to her data warehouse and operational data store experience, Joyce has a strong background in traditional system development in the mainframe, client/server and Internet environments.  Besides her international consulting work, Joyce speaks frequently at data warehouse conferences, is an instructor for public seminars, is a contributor to several trade publications and has co-authored with W. H. Inmon, Dan Meers and R. H. Terdeman on Data Warehousing and E-Business, published by Wiley & Sons.  Joyce has managed and implemented data warehouses and operational data stores for pharmaceuticals, restaurants, telecommunications, government, medical organizations, financial institutions, oil and gas, insurance, research and development and retail environments.  Ms. Norris-Montanari can be reached at JMontanari@IntelSols.com.

Jonathan Geiger is Executive Vice President at Intelligent Solutions, Inc.  Jonathan has been involved in many Corporate Information Factory and Customer Relationship Management projects within the utility, telecommunications, manufacturing, education, chemical, financial and retail industries.  In his 25 years as a practitioner and consultant, Jonathan has managed or performed work in virtually every aspect of information management.  He presents frequently at national and international conferences, teaches several public seminars, and has co-authored two books.  His latest book, published by John Wiley & Sons, is Building the Customer-Centric Enterprise.
