.: Meeting Details :.

Time: 10:00 AM, Thursday, April 3, 2003
Location:
UC/Davis Extension, 2901 K Street, Sacramento, CA
Presentation(s): Herding Cats:
DAs and DBAs must work together to prevent architectural chaos

Just what IS the difference between a Data Administrator and a Database Administrator?  Easy! A DBA wears a beeper, and a DA does not.  Actually, these jobs are both more different, and their goals more alike, than you might think.

Change is the common enemy, with each new project trying to "wander off" on its own unique path.  The DA and DBA are both faced with trying to manage and focus enterprise change in productive ways, but their perspectives are so different, that they often seem directly opposed.  How many clashes does it take for the DA to start throwing data models "over the wall", to the DBA for implementation?

In this presentation Mr. Jacobs will share with you some insights and experiences from many, many trips to the wall.  The decision to attack the wall (instead of each other) is not always an easy one.

The presentation includes:

  • The true differences between DA and DBA roles
  • How those differences can create friction
  • The common goals of the DA and DBA
  • Using change control to find common ground
  • Saving sanity and preventing architectural chaos.
Speaker(s): Jeff Jacobs

Jeff Jacobs is an independent consultant, specializing in data administration and enterprise data architecture.  He has extensive experience in requirements analysis, data modeling, and business process reengineering.  Jeff worked in data administration for budget systems at the California Department of Finance for nearly eight years, and his current efforts include assisting the data administration office of one of the world's largest retirement systems.  Jeff has given presentations at several DAMA International and Regional Symposia, as well as local chapter presentations.  He is the founder of the Sacramento Valley Chapter of DAMA, and has served as its President, Treasurer and Program Director.
